Four individuals were arrested for violent disorder following a late-night gathering in central London after France's 2-0 victory over Morocco in the World Cup quarter-final. During the event, a police officer sustained injuries after being struck in the head with a glass bottle.
Details of the Event
Police were initially called to Edgware Road on Thursday evening due to a group of people congregating and obstructing traffic. According to the Metropolitan Police, the situation escalated as the group began throwing bottles and setting off fireworks.
One officer was transported to hospital with head injuries, believed to have been caused by a glass bottle.
Official Responses
Paul Swaddle, leader of Westminster City Council, condemned the behaviour and urged World Cup fans to maintain respect throughout the tournament.
"We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers," a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated.
Footage shared on social media showed fireworks being set off while officers in riot gear were present at the scene.
No other injuries were reported, and the group eventually dispersed. The road was reopened around 01:00 BST, according to the Metropolitan Police.
"We will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice."
