Former School Worker Sentenced for Historical Child Sex Offences
A former school worker from Coleraine, Patrick Sharkey, aged 83, has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison in the Republic of Ireland after pleading guilty to multiple historical child sexual abuse charges.
Sharkey admitted to 132 charges relating to offences committed between the 1970s and 1990s during his employment at St Joseph's High School.
Letterkenny Circuit Court was informed that the offences involved 19 victims, many of whom were pupils at the school. These victims were often taken to Donegal for weekend outdoor activities such as canoeing.

Details of the Abuse and Court Proceedings
The court heard that Sharkey would take many of the victims on weekend canoeing trips, during which they stayed at his parents' home in Clonmany, County Donegal. This residence, where Sharkey grew up, was the location of much of the abuse, although some offences also occurred at addresses in Dublin.
At an earlier sentencing hearing, victims recounted experiences of being made to share a bed with Sharkey during these trips. Many described enduring years of mental and emotional trauma after waking in the night to find Sharkey touching them.

During sentencing, the judge characterized Sharkey's offending as calculated, premeditated, and predatory.
Victims' Impact Statements and Previous Convictions
Last month, the court received harrowing impact statements from several victims. One man expressed gratitude that Sharkey remained alive long enough to face justice, stating:
"Thank you for staying alive long enough to get your day in court."
In 2023, Sharkey was sentenced to three years and four months in Northern Ireland after pleading guilty to nine counts of indecent assault on three boys between 1 September 1988 and 31 December 1998.
