A five-year-old girl died after being struck by a van in Newry on Sunday night.

Police reported receiving notification of a collision involving a black Ford Tourneo and a child in the Springfarm Heights area at approximately 21:25 BST.

Detective Inspector Stewart stated that the girl was transported to hospital but subsequently died from her injuries.

The Carnagat Road remains closed at its junctions with Springfarm Heights and Stony Hill.

The van's driver, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody.

Authorities have issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident to come forward.

"The girl was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries," Detective Inspector Stewart said.
