Incident at Seaton Carew Beach
A father who died alongside another man while assisting two children in distress in the sea has been identified locally as Wayne Taylor.
The incident occurred at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool on Sunday. Both men were rescued from the water by the RNLI at approximately 15:45 BST but were pronounced dead shortly after being brought ashore.
The two children involved were transported to hospital as a precaution and have been confirmed to be safe.
Cleveland Police stated that formal identification of the deceased had not yet taken place and that investigations were ongoing on behalf of the coroner.
Community and Official Reactions
Jonathan Brash, Labour MP for Hartlepool, described the deaths as a "heartbreaking tragedy" for the local community.
On Monday, Graham Harrison, leader of Hartlepool Borough Council and member of Reform UK, announced he had requested "a full review of the current water safety arrangements at Seaton Carew" and along the surrounding coastline.
Currently, lifeguards are present on the beach only during the summer school holidays, which had not yet commenced at the time of the incident.
Independent councillor Sue Little from Seaton Carew has advocated for lifeguard coverage from May through the end of September. A petition supporting the extension of lifeguard services beyond the school holidays has garnered over 1,600 signatures.
Rescue Efforts and Eyewitness Account
The emergency response involved Hartlepool, Redcar, and Staithes Coastguard Rescue Teams, alongside police and the North East Ambulance Service.
Davey Short, who was walking along the beach during the incident, succeeded in rescuing one of the children, a boy, on his second attempt.
"I realised something was not right because there was a woman screaming and shouting," he said.
"I ran straight in and dived into the water, I got a bit scared myself and came back in a way to get my bearings.
"I wish I could have done more. I would do it again if I had to, I'm a dad with kids of my own."
