Proposal to Pause Overnight Parking Ban in Eryri
A ban on overnight parking at 11 car parks within Wales' largest national park, Eryri National Park, is recommended to be "paused" at a minimum of nine locations, according to a recent report.
The Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) implemented restrictions on overnight parking at these car parks starting 1 April, aiming to address issues such as littering and anti-social behaviour.

However, the ban has raised concerns among local residents and visitors alike, who have questioned the potential consequences, including the displacement of overnight parking to other areas.
Complexity of the Issue and Recommendations
A report scheduled for discussion by the national park authority later this month describes the issue as "not straightforward" and recommends pausing the overnight parking restrictions at most of the affected sites.
Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, attracts nearly four million visitors annually. Many hikers commence their ascent of Yr Wyddfa, the park's highest peak, during the early morning hours to reach the summit by sunrise.
In April, local community members expressed to the BBC their concerns that the parking ban might lead to increased parking in residential streets. Additionally, a local guide voiced apprehension about the potential negative impact on her business.
Chief Executive's Report Ahead of AGM
Prior to the ENPA's annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for 10 June, a report authored by the chief executive recommended that it is "necessary to pause the revision of car park operational hours on most of our sites to fully consider the consequences for users."
"The authority is committed to finding a solution to this problem, although it is not straightforward,"
the report states, emphasizing the complexity of the issue. It further notes that problems associated with overnight camping include litter, waste, and anti-social behaviour, as well as concerns about not supporting existing legitimate caravan and camping sites operating in the local area.
Details of the Current and Proposed Parking Restrictions
Currently, overnight parking is prohibited between 22:00 and 03:00 at nine of the car parks, and between 22:00 and 06:00 at Llyn Tegid and Llangywer. The report suggests introducing parking restrictions at Llyn Tegid and Llangywer between 01:00 and 03:00 as part of a potential pilot scheme.
According to the report,
"The main reason for this is that night-time parking use at these car parks is not considered essential to the general enjoyment of the national park...the main use of these car parks is daytime access to Llyn Tegid and the surrounding area,"
it explains.
Future Consultations and Approach
The report recommends extensive further consultations with various organisations and national park users before reconsidering the issue at the end of the year or in early 2027.
It concludes,
"It is unlikely there will be a single or quick solution, but we will ensure a joined approach and if a full solution cannot be found then further mitigation of the problem will be explored,"
highlighting the authority's commitment to addressing the challenges associated with overnight parking in the park.
