A Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician has strongly condemned a "series of vile and threatening comments" directed at him on social media platforms.

South Antrim MLA, Trevor Clarke, expressed his concern over the nature of the messages, stating:

"The language used in these posts is shocking and deeply concerning. These are not throwaway remarks, they are explicit threats of violence and intimidation."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that it received a report on Friday regarding threatening online messages aimed at a local elected representative. The PSNI added that their investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

'Worrying reality'

Clarke emphasized that such abuse should not be tolerated by anyone in public office, asserting:

"No one in public life should have to tolerate this kind of abuse."

He further insisted that those responsible must face consequences for their actions, describing the threats as:

"An attack not just on me as an individual, but on the democratic process itself."

Despite the threats, Clarke affirmed his resolve, stating he will not be intimidated and will continue his duties:

"I will continue to do my job without fear or favour."

Detective Sergeant Crothers from the PSNI acknowledged the troubling nature of the situation, noting that elected representatives are frequently subjected to abuse and threats. He commented:

"This is a worrying reality that elected representatives are routinely subjected to abuse and threats. This is wholly unacceptable and we will robustly investigate any offences reported to us."

He also assured that the PSNI will persist in efforts to support politicians, enabling them to perform their roles free from fear and intimidation.
