Speeding Driver Sentenced for Fatal Collision

A driver who was recorded traveling at 91mph before striking and killing a pedestrian has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Raymond Munro failed to notice David McCallum, 50, as he crossed the road in East Kilbride, hitting him with his VW Golf and causing catastrophic injuries.

At the High Court in Stirling, Judge Lord Stuart stated that the 43-year-old Munro exhibited a "wilful disregard for the rules of the road" in the incident that occurred in September 2022.

Munro, who had seven previous motoring convictions, was also disqualified from driving for eight years after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Details of the Incident

The trial revealed that McCallum was walking home from the nearby Village Inn when he crossed the Kingsway dual carriageway.

Jurors were informed that McCallum was thrown into the air by the impact and would have died instantly.

Munro, from Uddingston in South Lanarkshire, denied causing McCallum's death and chose not to give evidence during the trial.

However, he was convicted based on data retrieved from his car's on-board diagnostics system.

At the scene, Munro told a police officer that he had been driving at "approximately 50" mph in the outside lane.

Nevertheless, the jury heard that the speed at impact was recorded by a sensor located behind the VW badge on the bonnet at 91mph.

This data was supported by footage from two cameras at a nearby BP garage, which helped calculate a speed of 89mph moments before the collision.

Family Tribute

Following McCallum's death, his family paid tribute to him, describing him as "the most sincere and caring man ever."
