Doctor Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Male Patients

A sexual health doctor who sexually assaulted male patients, violating their trust, has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Dr Timothy Girling, 55, from West Molesey in Surrey, was found guilty of sexually assaulting patients during medical examinations for complaints such as rashes or other health concerns, a court heard.

At Bournemouth Crown Court, a jury convicted Girling of sexual assault, voyeurism, and attempted voyeurism. He also admitted to possessing indecent images of children.

Victims Speak Out

One victim told police about the impact of the abuse:

I left there crying because it was very wrong and he just abused his power.
I was a very, very vulnerable person back then, I was in a really dark place.

Secret Filming and Evidence

The court heard that Girling used his phone to secretly record appointments and installed a camera to film men using a bathroom. Approximately 600 images depicting penises or "tight clothing" were found on his devices, the jury was told.

Prosecutor Rebecca Austin stated that Girling exploited his medical role for sexual gratification:

Using the guise of medical necessity to gain sexual gratification.

She also mentioned that Girling had been diagnosed with autism, which she explained can lead to developing special interests, noting that he had one focused on penises.

Judge's Remarks and Sentencing

Judge Jonathan Fuller KC highlighted that Girling continued offending despite suspension and reinstatement after an earlier complaint. Addressing the defendant, the judge said:

Being a doctor is a significant thing in a person's life and no doubt there must be many you have helped, but on another darker side there are those you have abused.

The judge rejected the claim that autism caused the offenses, stating:

Your interest was a sexual one and that sexual activity was of your own choosing.
The reality is you used your position to satisfy your particular sexual interests.
This was a gross betrayal of your patients' trust.
