Bedford BabyBank Sees Rising Demand Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

A charity supporting families in Bedford has reported that demand for its services is increasing at a rate faster than donations are received.

Faces BabyBank, which began operations in January 2023, initially assisted approximately 1,100 families annually. In 2024, this figure rose slightly to around 1,200 families, but in 2025, the number surged to 2,098 families.

The charity attributes this growth to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, stating it is "supporting more families than ever before as more and more people were struggling."

Michaela Martindale, the charity's chief executive, noted that many families are "returning for help several times rather than requiring just one emergency referral."

The charity has requested donations to be in good condition to ensure they can be effectively distributed to families in need.

Statistics Highlight Increased Support Provided

Data from the Baby Bank Alliance indicates that baby banks across the UK supported over 400,000 children in 2025.

In the same year, Faces BabyBank distributed 36,400 items of children's clothing, 54,080 nappies, 536 tubs of formula milk, 298 newborn starter packs, and 3,768 books and toys.

Additionally, the charity has provided essential items such as cots, Moses baskets, prams, highchairs, bedding, and baby baths.

Faces BabyBank relies heavily on donations and continually needs good quality goods or financial contributions to purchase essential items when stock is low.

Economic Challenges Affect Working Families

The charity highlighted that an increasing number of parents who are employed still cannot afford essential baby items because wages are not keeping pace with rising household costs.

Faces BabyBank operates from the Bedford Foodbank warehouse located on the town's Manton Industrial Estate.

Chief Executive Comments on Ongoing Crisis

"Every week we meet parents who are making impossible choices between paying the rent, heating their home or buying the essentials their baby needs.
The cost-of-living crisis hasn't gone away - it has simply changed, and families are living with its effects for much longer.
We're supporting more families than ever before, and we're increasingly seeing repeat referrals because people simply aren't recovering financially."

Martindale also emphasized housing challenges faced by families.

"Housing is another huge issue.
Many families are living in temporary accommodation or overcrowded homes where there isn't even room for a cot or pushchair."

She added that the Bedford community remains "incredibly generous," but demand continues to outpace donations.
