David Sullivan Resigns to Address Personal Allegations
David Sullivan, the joint-chair and director of West Ham United Football Club, has announced his immediate resignation amid allegations concerning his private life. The 77-year-old billionaire, who co-owns the club, stated that he is stepping down to dedicate his full energy and attention to contesting what he described as "false allegations" regarding his personal conduct. These claims are set to be revealed in a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times on Monday.
Sullivan, who amassed his fortune in the adult entertainment industry before founding the Sport newspapers, said on Saturday that his decision to resign was made "for the benefit of transparency." He did not provide specific details about the accusations but categorically denied them, labeling the allegations as "factually incorrect and entirely false." Sullivan also declared his intention to pursue legal action against any media outlets that publish or broadcast the claims.
"After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry, in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me," Sullivan said.
"I am absolutely not the person the media has decided to paint me as. I have not been provided with any proper explanation as to how these individuals or their claims were independently verified or assessed for credibility prior to publication. I believe that the entire process has been fundamentally unfair and completely lacking in any due impartiality."
"I will be suing the BBC for libel, along with any other media outlet that repeats any libellous allegations.
"None of these allegations relate to my more than 30 years in football; it has been one of the greatest passions and privileges of my life. I care deeply about the club, its supporters, its players, its staff, and its future. At what is already a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters concerning me to become an unnecessary distraction or a source of instability.
"Therefore, after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to resign as joint-chair and director of West Ham United FC with immediate effect. This has been an incredibly painful decision to make, but it is one made out of love, respect, and responsibility toward a football club and a fanbase that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward.
"I am stepping down to apply my full energy and attention on fighting these false allegations. I have officially engaged my legal team and we are preparing to issue legal proceedings in respect of each and every false complaint that has been made against me. I will be seeking full redress, legally and publicly, on every single front."
Fan Frustration and Club Turmoil
West Ham supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with Sullivan’s leadership in recent years. Their anger reached a peak last month when the club was relegated from the Premier League after finishing 18th. Sullivan was jeered by the crowd during the club’s final game of the season against Leeds United and left the match early.

According to a source, the atmosphere behind the scenes at West Ham was described as "carnage" in the days leading up to Sullivan’s resignation. The club faces a significant rebuild following its relegation, with several senior executives departing in recent months, including vice-chair Karren Brady.
It is understood that some board members have long sought to remove Sullivan, who acquired a 50% stake in the club in 2010 alongside his late business partner David Gold. The pair previously held a majority stake in Birmingham City.
Despite stepping down as a director, Sullivan remains West Ham’s largest shareholder. Club sources have indicated that the club is currently in "limbo" regarding its financial future, with concerns that its value has declined following relegation to the Championship.
Efforts by external buyers to acquire a portion of the Gold family’s shares earlier this year were reportedly blocked. Such a deal would have begun to reduce Sullivan’s influence. An alternative arrangement was planned involving Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský, the club’s second-largest shareholder, and Sullivan jointly purchasing part of the Gold family’s stake and sharing boardroom control.
Křetínský was expected to match Sullivan’s control, with both owning over 40%. However, West Ham’s relegation has introduced uncertainty over the deal’s terms, which remain unsigned by the involved parties.
Future Club Governance and Football Operations
Board-level discussions are scheduled for the coming week to consider potential changes to the club’s operational control and football structure following Sullivan’s resignation. Industry observers have noted that Sullivan’s sons, Jack and Dave Jr, have taken a more active role in West Ham’s recruitment over the past two years.
Jack Sullivan has been involved in the search for a new sporting director, with an appointment anticipated soon. Nonetheless, sources expect Křetínský’s faction to seek greater influence over football matters. Křetínský has previously maintained a low profile but is believed to have played a role in West Ham’s decision to retain manager Nuno Espírito Santo after relegation.
West Ham faces a substantial rebuild after dropping into the Championship and reported a loss of £104.2 million in the last financial year. The club must generate over £100 million in sales and is expected to lose key players during the summer transfer window. Further disruption occurred when Max Hahn, the club’s technical head of recruitment, resigned last week.
Personal and Legal Context
Sullivan, who is engaged to reality television personality Ampika Pickston, reportedly informed close friends on Friday evening of his intention to resign in light of the allegations before instructing his lawyers to prepare his resignation statement.
"As I depart, I want to thank everyone connected with West Ham United, past and present, for the loyalty, friendship, memories and European adventures and successes that I will carry with me forever," Sullivan added.
"West Ham United will always remain close to my heart, and I have total confidence that the board of directors and interim chief executive officer Karim Virani will do everything they can to take the club forward in the right direction. I wish everyone connected with the club every success in the future.
"I will not be making further public comment at this stage, but I reserve all legal rights available to me in relation to any false or defamatory allegations."
