Road-Rage Incident Captured on Dashcam

A driver was recorded on his own dashcam delivering a punch that rendered another motorist unconscious in what has been described as an "extremely aggressive and shocking" road rage incident.

The victim had abruptly stopped his vehicle in Llanrwst in June, suspecting a mechanical issue.

Caernarfon Crown Court reviewed footage showing John Lee exiting his car and shouting

"what are you doing?"
before striking the victim in the presence of his wife, children, and elderly parents.

Lee, 37, from Cae Tyddyn, Llanrwst, had previously admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Details of the Incident

The court heard that the victim had stopped to collect eggs from a store and halted his vehicle suddenly after hearing a loud beep, fearing a fault with his car.

Prosecution barrister Rabia Tariq stated that Lee, who was driving behind, exited his vehicle, grabbed and shook the victim, then delivered a punch.

When the victim's wife exited the car, dashcam footage showed Lee verbally confronting her aggressively.

Injuries and Impact

The punch caused the victim to lose consciousness and resulted in a bruised eye socket and grazed eyelid.

In a personal statement, the victim described the attack as

"extremely aggressive and shocking"
and reported increased forgetfulness since the incident.

He also noted the lasting emotional toll on his wife and family.

Defence and Mitigation

Lee's defence described the assault as a

"single, isolated" moment of madness
.

The court was informed that Lee, a self-employed carpenter and joiner and former military serviceman whose career ended due to injury, had experienced mental health struggles.

It was noted he founded a mental health football team to support himself and others locally, and his only previous conviction was a 2005 referral for common assault.

In mitigation, Richard Edwards stated Lee had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and

"bitterly regrets"
his impulsive behaviour.

Sentencing

Judge Nicola Jones emphasized the seriousness of the assault, particularly as it occurred in front of the victim's parents and children.

She also condemned Lee's

"verbally aggressive"
conduct toward the victim's wife.

Alongside the suspended prison term, Lee was ordered to complete 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days and to pay £500 in compensation plus a statutory surcharge.
