Councillor Alan Lewis Responds to Sectarian Letter
A letter containing sectarian and Islamophobic content has been linked to Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) councillor Alan Lewis, prompting him to clarify that it has "nothing whatsoever" to do with him. The letter, which has reportedly been circulated on social media and delivered to some households in Clough and Seaforde, County Down, calls on members of the community to contact Lewis.
Lewis described the letter as "anonymous and threatening" and stated it was "designed to intimidate."
Official Statement and Police Involvement
In an official statement, Lewis emphasized that threats and intimidation have no place in a democratic society. He said:
"It has been brought to my attention that an anonymous and threatening letter circulating in Clough and Seaforde, delivered to some households, which is designed to intimidate, makes reference to me and asks members of the local community to contact me."
"I wish to make clear that this correspondence has nothing whatsoever to do with me and I was unaware of its circulation until it was brought to my attention."
"I totally reject its contents and make clear my rejection of it."
Lewis confirmed that he has referred the matter to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and urged anyone with information about those responsible to come forward.
"I have referred this matter to the PSNI."
"Threats and intimidation can play no part in the democratic process."
"As a local councillor I am always available to work for all my constituents and to help everyone with the issues of concern to them."
"Anyone with information on those responsible should contact the PSNI."
