Deputy Leader Position Vacated Following Election

A council is set to elect a new deputy leader after the previous officeholder secured a seat in the Scottish Parliament election.

Katie Hagmann won the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituency for the SNP last month.

Following her election, she resigned as deputy leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Despite stepping down from the deputy leader role, Hagmann plans to continue serving as a councillor representing the Mid Galloway and Wigtown West ward within the local authority.

Background on Hagmann's Role

Hagmann assumed the deputy leader position approximately one year ago when her party gained control of the council.

Prior to this, the Conservative leader and deputy leader had resigned amid a vote of no confidence.

Recent Election and Council Developments

Last month, Hagmann contributed to the SNP retaining the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituency, which is located to the north of Dumfries and Galloway.

Subsequently, a special council meeting has been convened to determine her successor as deputy to council leader Stephen Thompson.

It is anticipated that the individual elected to this position will serve until at least the next local government elections scheduled for May of the following year.
