Man Charged with Terrorist Activities
A British man is scheduled to appear in court accused of directing terrorist activities, including participation in a training camp in Somalia, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Jermaine Grant, 43, who has no fixed address, has been charged with directing the activities of Al-Shabaab following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London, the Metropolitan Police stated.
Grant faces three charges related to attending an Al-Shabaab commando training camp in Kismayu, Somalia, as well as two counts of possession of an AK47 rifle for terrorist purposes. These alleged offences occurred between 31 December 2007 and 1 January 2010, during the period when Al-Shabaab was active in Somalia.
He is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
Background on Al-Shabaab
The organisation has been described as a "persistent threat" in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, carrying out "high profile attacks that challenge government authority," according to a 2025 assessment by the UK Government.
Al-Shabaab has also been linked to al Qaida.
The group has targeted international aid workers, journalists, business people, and non-government organisations that have opposed or resisted it.
