Andy Burnham Takes Oath as Makerfield MP

Andy Burnham has been officially sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Makerfield, greeted by enthusiastic applause from his Labour colleagues in the House of Commons.

Earlier the same day, Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as both prime minister and leader of the Labour Party.

By-Election Victory and Leadership Ambitions

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, secured the Makerfield seat with a majority of 9,000 votes in last week's by-election, successfully overcoming a challenge from Reform UK. He has expressed his intention to succeed Starmer as Labour leader.

The by-election was prompted by the resignation of Labour's Josh Simons, who stepped down to allow Burnham to contest the seat. Burnham previously represented the neighbouring Greater Manchester constituency of Leigh from 2001 until 2017, when he transitioned to the mayoral role.

Commons Reception and Support for Leadership Bid

As Burnham made his way through the Commons chamber, he bowed his head several times and smiled warmly upon being welcomed by fellow MPs.

Former health secretary Wes Streeting has publicly declared his support for Burnham's leadership campaign. Streeting resigned from the government last month, citing a loss of confidence in Starmer's leadership.

Farewell to Greater Manchester Staff

Before departing for London, Burnham bid farewell to his staff at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. He was presented with a Manchester-themed armchair embroidered with bees—the symbol of Manchester—and the city's skyline. The armchair also features the phrase "we do things differently here."

At a staff meeting prior to his departure, Burnham expressed his gratitude, saying:

"Thanked staff from the bottom of his heart."

He became emotional as he addressed the group, describing his tenure as Greater Manchester mayor as the "privilege" of his life.
