13-Year-Old Girl Dies After River Wharfe Search Near Burnsall

Tragic Death of 13-Year-Old Girl at River Wharfe

A 13-year-old girl has died after being reported missing in a river near a North Yorkshire beauty spot.

The teenager was reported missing at 18:30 BST on Sunday at the River Wharfe, close to Burnsall, in the Yorkshire Dales.

She was located shortly afterward and rescued from the water. Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency responders, and being transported to hospital by air ambulance, North Yorkshire Police confirmed that she had died.

Recent Water-Related Deaths During Heatwave

This incident is among at least 15 water-related deaths reported during the recent heatwave.

On Saturday, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire died in hospital after encountering difficulties in the sea off the Merseyside coast on Bank Holiday Monday.

Also on Saturday, a woman in her 60s died after she and a man entered the water in Thornton Cleveleys to "rescue their dog." Lancashire Police reported that the man, also in his 60s, remains in critical condition in hospital.

Additionally, a 19-year-old man died after being rescued from a lake in Nottinghamshire. A body was also found during the search for a man who had difficulties in the water in the Norfolk Broads.

Ongoing Search for Missing Boy in South Yorkshire

In South Yorkshire, emergency search crews remained at the scene overnight into Monday, awaiting first light to continue the search for a boy believed to have gone missing in the River Don.

Emergency services were called to Ferry Boat Lane, Mexborough, at approximately 20:00 BST on Saturday following reports that a boy had entered the water but had not been seen exiting.

South Yorkshire Police stated that emergency services, an underwater search team, and a mountain rescue team have been involved in searching the river, riverbank, and nearby open land.

The boy's family is receiving support, and the police have urged the public to avoid the area to allow crews to carry out their work effectively.
