UN Experts Call for Release of British Couple in Iran
UN human rights experts have demanded the release of a British couple sentenced to 10 years in an Iranian prison on allegations of spying.
Alice Edwards and Mai Sato highlighted serious irregularities in the legal proceedings against Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who are from East Sussex.
The couple were detained in January of the previous year while traveling through Iran on a motorcycle journey.
They are currently held in Tehran's Evin prison and have been refusing food after their phone contact with family was severed last month.
Edwards and Sato emphasized that ensuring the Foremans' survival and health is an urgent concern.
"After 30 days without food, this is a medical emergency," they stated.
They further asserted that Lindsay and Craig Foreman should not be imprisoned.
"They appear to have been wrongfully detained, prosecuted on highly questionable grounds, and sentenced after proceedings that failed to meet basic fair trial guarantees."
The experts expressed concern that the Foremans might be held as political leverage and have called on Iranian authorities to overturn their convictions.
They also urged the UK government to employ all diplomatic channels to secure the couple's release.
The Foreign Office confirmed it will continue efforts to ensure the Foremans' safe return to the UK.
