Trump to Make Final Decision on Iran Ceasefire Agreement
US President Donald Trump announced he is convening a meeting to make a "final determination" regarding an agreement to extend a ceasefire with Iran.
He emphasized key conditions, stating that Iran "must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb," and that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened for "unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions." Additionally, he insisted that any mines present in the waterway "must be destroyed."
"I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination," he said on Truth Social. Iran has not yet commented.
This announcement follows reports from US officials to the BBC indicating that the two countries have agreed on a framework of a deal, referred to as a memorandum of understanding, which remains subject to approval by both Trump and Iran's leadership.
The proposed deal would extend the ceasefire for 60 days and initiate talks concerning the future of Iran's nuclear program.
In his post, Trump expressed readiness to lift the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and suggested that ships currently caught in the waterway "may start the process of heading home!"
He also demanded that Iran permit the US to remove and destroy its enriched uranium stockpile.
"No money will be exchanged, until further notice," he added.
The US has consistently required that Iran cease production of highly enriched uranium and dispose of its existing stockpile, which could theoretically be used to manufacture nuclear weapons.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran's Fars news agency cited informed sources describing Trump's recent comments as a "mixture of truth and lies."
On Thursday, US Vice-President JD Vance stated that negotiators were "going back and forth on a couple of language points," including the "question of enrichment."
"We're not there yet, but we're very close and we're going to keep on working at it," he said.
Since the initial ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect on 8 April, Trump has repeatedly suggested that the two sides are nearing a deal and that negotiations are advancing, although no substantive results have been achieved to date.
