Fatal Shooting Incident in Israel
One individual has died and five others sustained injuries after a man driving a car opened fire at multiple locations in Israel, according to authorities.
Israel's emergency medical service, Magen David Adom (MDA), reported that a man approximately 35 years old succumbed to gunshot wounds. Among the injured, two are in serious condition, while three others are in moderate condition with penetrating injuries to their bodies, MDA stated.
Suspect Neutralized and Accomplice Arrested
The alleged attacker, identified as an Israeli Arab, was killed by security forces near the town of Kokhav Yair, which is located close to the occupied West Bank.
Police Chief Danny Levy informed journalists that the attacker had a criminal record. Additionally, an alleged accomplice has been taken into custody.
"This morning, a heinous terrorist went out, reached Kokhav Yair, and unfortunately managed, before being eliminated, to murder an Israeli citizen and injure others," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet.
Authorities reported that they killed the suspect following a brief pursuit and recovered both the weapon and the vehicle used in the attack.
A second suspect was subsequently arrested after making statements indicating involvement in the attack, police said. They also noted that this individual attempted to assault officers.
Political Reactions and Security Measures
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir commented on the incident, stating:
"The law on the death penalty for terrorists also applies to Israeli Arabs"
"If he had been captured, I would have demanded that he be executed. But it is better that he was eliminated beforehand," he added.
Ben-Gvir was referring to a recent Israeli law that establishes the death penalty as the default sentence for Palestinians convicted of deadly terror attacks.
It is notable that approximately 20% of Israel's population are Arab citizens, many of whom identify as Palestinians.
West Bank Checkpoints and Security Measures
In the West Bank, local Palestinian sources and the Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that Israeli forces closed two checkpoints at the entrances to the city of Tulkarem, situated north of the attack locations.
Temporary checkpoints were also established at the entrance to the nearby city of Qalqilya.
