Festival del Habano Postponed Due to Fuel Shortage

An annual cigar festival in Havana, Cuba, known as the Festival del Habano, has been postponed as a result of a fuel shortage linked to a US oil blockade.

The festival's organising committee announced on Saturday that the event, originally scheduled to run for five days in late February, will be postponed until further notice.

The committee cited the "complex economic situation" in Cuba, attributing it to the "economic, commercial and financial blockade" imposed by the United States.

Fuel Shortages and Power Cuts Impacting Cuba

The Caribbean island is experiencing a fuel shortage that has led to widespread power cuts. This situation has been exacerbated by US actions seizing oil shipments destined for Cuba from its ally Venezuela.

In addition to electricity shortages, Cuba is facing a deficit of aviation fuel, prompting several airlines to suspend flights to the country. Some nations, including the United Kingdom, have issued advisories against non-essential travel to Cuba.

Significance of the Festival and Impact on Tourism

Cuban cigars are internationally renowned for their quality but remain illegal in the United States due to longstanding trade embargoes. The Festival del Habano typically attracts over 1,300 participants from approximately 70 countries. Attendees engage in sampling cigars from Cuban producers and visiting tobacco plantations and factories.

Given the limitations on international tourism caused by the US embargo, the festival's organisers expressed hope that the event could be rescheduled once conditions improve.

The organising committee is actively working to establish a new date for the festival, which has not yet been announced.

"The priority of the Habano Festival is to offer its participants a comprehensive experience at the height of the relevance and prestige that this event represents internationally," the committee stated.
"The postponement of this celebration is a measure aimed at protecting this experience."

Venezuela's Oil Supply and Recent US Actions

Before recent developments, Venezuela was believed to supply Cuba with approximately 35,000 barrels of oil daily. However, on 3 January, the US military detained former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, impacting these shipments.

Since then, power outages lasting up to 18 hours daily have affected critical services such as hospital emergency wards, dialysis patients, and water pumping stations.

US-Cuba Relations and International Reactions

US President Donald Trump has urged Cuban authorities to "make a deal" or face unspecified consequences.

Meanwhile, United Nations human rights experts have characterized Washington's restrictions on Cuba's oil imports as an "extreme form of unilateral economic coercion."

The relationship between the US and Cuba has been strained since 1959 when communist leader Fidel Castro overthrew a US-backed government. Economic and trade embargoes imposed by the US have been in place since 1960.

Although diplomatic relations saw improvements during former President Barack Obama's administration, many of these measures were reversed under the Trump administration.
