Drone Attack in Moscow Region Causes Fatalities and Injuries
Russian officials reported that three individuals were killed overnight during a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeting the Moscow region. A woman lost her life in a house in Khimki, located north of Moscow, where another person was trapped under debris, according to regional governor Andrei Vorobiev. Additionally, a man and a woman were killed in the village of Pogorelki.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that 12 people sustained injuries following strikes on an oil refinery within the city. The Russian military stated that 556 drones were intercepted during the assault.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the strikes as an "entirely justified" response to deadly Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Recent Attacks and Casualties in Ukraine
Earlier in the week, a significant Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv resulted in 24 fatalities. In Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, officials reported that eight people were injured overnight due to Russian drone attacks and shelling.
Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Moscow currently controlling approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.
Details from Moscow Region Authorities
In a Telegram post early Sunday, Governor Vorobiev stated,
"since three o'clock in the morning, air defence forces have been repelling a large-scale UAV [drone] attack on the capital region".
He noted that four people—three men and a woman—were injured in the region, and several houses sustained damage. A private house caught fire in the village of Subbotino, southwest of Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sobyanin reported that 12 individuals were injured when drones struck an entrance to the city’s oil refinery, damaging three nearby houses.
Meanwhile, Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia’s busiest airport serving Moscow, reported finding drone wreckage on its premises but confirmed no injuries occurred. Airport authorities stated,
"The situation in the passenger terminals is calm. Sheremetyevo Airport is providing stable passenger and aircraft services."
Ukrainian Response and Statements
Later on Sunday, President Zelensky commented that Ukraine’s "long-range sanctions have reached the Moscow region," referring to the drone attack. He wrote on Telegram,
"We are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war."
Zelensky had previously pledged retaliation for recent Russian attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions. On Saturday, he stated that Ukraine had destroyed high-value Russian military assets this week, including aircraft, a helicopter, and a cargo ship. He also mentioned attacks on Russian oil facilities.
In recent months, Ukraine’s military has intensified strikes on key energy infrastructure across Russia. Kyiv asserts these targets are legitimate as they enable Russia’s ongoing war efforts.
Continued Attacks in Dnipropetrovsk and Other Regions
Overnight, Russia conducted more than 30 drone and shelling attacks across four districts in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to top local official Oleksandr Hanzha. He reported eight injuries and damage or destruction to multiple houses.
Three people were injured in the regional capital, Dnipro, where several fires were also reported.
On Saturday evening, a woman was injured in a Russian drone attack in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region, local officials said.
Ukraine’s air force provided an update indicating that Russia launched 287 drones since late Saturday. Of these, 279 were intercepted or shot down, but eight drones successfully hit seven locations.
