Senior Russian Military Intelligence Official Shot in Moscow
A high-ranking Russian military intelligence officer has been hospitalized in critical condition after being shot multiple times in Moscow, according to state media reports.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, deputy director of Russia’s military intelligence agency (GRU), was attacked on Friday in the stairwell of his apartment building located in the north-west of Moscow by an unidentified assailant. He underwent surgery and remains in a coma, as reported by Oleg Tsaryov, a pro-Kremlin Ukrainian figure close to Alekseyev.

No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting, but speculation in Moscow has pointed towards Kyiv. Since the onset of the war, Ukrainian intelligence agencies have targeted numerous Russian military officers and officials installed by Russia, accusing them of involvement in war crimes.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned the incident as a "terrorist attack," alleging without evidence that it was intended to disrupt ongoing negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States aimed at ending the conflict.
"This terrorist attack once again confirmed the Zelenskyy regime’s focus on constant provocations, aimed in turn at derailing the negotiation process," Lavrov stated in Moscow.
In contrast, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha denied any Ukrainian involvement, suggesting the possibility of internal Russian disputes.
"We don’t know what happened with that particular general – maybe it was their own internal Russian in-fighting," Sybiha told .
Background on Vladimir Alekseyev
Alekseyev, born in Ukraine, holds the position of deputy director of the GRU, a military intelligence unit within Russia’s defense ministry responsible for covert operations abroad, including assassinations, sabotage, and espionage.
He was among the senior officers who provided intelligence to President Vladimir Putin prior to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Alekseyev has also been identified as a key figure overseeing Russia’s private military companies and was involved in negotiations with Yevgeny Prigozhin during the Wagner Group rebellion in summer 2023.
Following the rebellion, Alekseyev was reportedly detained briefly due to his connections with Wagner but ultimately retained his position within the military intelligence hierarchy.
He is subject to sanctions by the United States for his alleged role in efforts to interfere in the 2020 US presidential election. The United Kingdom has also imposed sanctions on him related to the conflict in Ukraine.
Reactions and Context
Denys Prokopenko, commander of Ukraine’s Azov regiment, commented on social media platform X that if Alekseyev survives, he would "never sleep peacefully again."
"No war criminal who has killed and tortured Ukrainian soldiers and civilians, destroyed Ukrainian cities, abducted Ukrainian children, or committed other crimes against the Ukrainian people will ever feel safe," Prokopenko added.
The timing of the shooting is notable, occurring one day after Russian and Ukrainian delegations, including Alekseyev’s superior Igor Kostyukov, met in a location outside of Moscow to discuss peace talks. Both sides reported some progress during these discussions.
Previous negotiations have faltered due to Russia’s maximalist territorial demands and Moscow’s repeated refusal to accept Ukraine’s calls for an immediate ceasefire.
Ukraine has targeted at least three Russian generals in the Moscow region over the past year, though these operations have typically involved explosives rather than shootings.
Details about the covert networks responsible for assassinations and attacks on military infrastructure within Russia and Russian-controlled territories remain limited.
Security Concerns and Criticism
The shooting of Alekseyev highlights apparent security failures by Russian services in protecting senior military personnel within the country. The circumstances of the attack, including how the gunman gained access to the apartment building without detection, have drawn criticism from Russian military bloggers.

Independent security expert Andrei Soldatov described the incident as "incredible sloppiness," noting that increased protection for top military officials would have been expected.
"One would have expected them to scale up protection for top military brass," Soldatov wrote on social media.
Police presence was visible near the scene of the shooting as investigations continue.

The residential building where the shooting occurred remains under scrutiny as authorities seek to determine the identity and motives of the assailant.
