Casualties and Damage from Overnight Strikes
Four individuals have lost their lives and over 50 others sustained injuries amid a significant series of Russian missile and drone attacks targeting Kyiv and its surrounding areas.
Explosions resonated throughout the region overnight into Sunday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the situation as
"it was a terrible night", reporting damage across all districts of the capital, including to residential buildings and schools.
Among the injured are three children, with ongoing rescue operations underway.

Context and Background of the Attacks
The strikes follow Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration of retaliation after accusing Ukraine of executing a deadly assault on a student dormitory in Starobilsk on Friday, which resulted in 18 fatalities.
Ukraine's armed forces general staff confirmed conducting an attack near Starobilsk in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine overnight Friday but stated the target was an elite Russian military unit.
Warnings and Intelligence Prior to the Assault
The Russian strikes on Sunday came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning about indications that Russia was preparing
"a combined strike on Ukrainian territory".
He referenced intelligence from Ukraine, European sources, and the United States suggesting that Russia might deploy the Oreshnik missile, which reportedly travels at speeds exceeding ten times the speed of sound and is currently considered impossible to intercept.
However, there has been no confirmation to date of Russia utilizing the Oreshnik missile in the recent bombardment.
Scope and Impact of the Attack on Kyiv
The assault struck over 40 locations across Kyiv, with falling debris igniting fires in residential buildings, warehouses, a supermarket, and a shopping center, according to Mayor Klitschko.
He stated that
"The capital has been subjected to a massive ballistic attack. Further launches are possible,"as reported by Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, on Telegram shortly after midnight.
One fatality occurred when a nine-storey residential building in the central Shevchenko district was hit, causing a fire on the upper floors.
In the same district, a strike near an air raid shelter at a school obstructed its entrance with debris, trapping several individuals inside.
Emergency services responded promptly to multiple damaged sites across the city, extinguishing fires, clearing debris, and providing medical assistance to the injured.
Casualties and Response in the Kyiv Region
In the Kyiv region surrounding the capital, two additional deaths were reported, according to regional head Mykola Kalashnyk.
He characterized the attack as
"deliberate terror against peaceful people"and added that
"emergency services are working in all places."
