Arrests Made in Connection with Death of Far-Right Student
Nine individuals have been detained in France as part of an investigation into the killing of a far-right nationalist student, allegedly by far-left militants.
Among those arrested is Jacques-Elie Favrot, who has been employed as a parliamentary assistant to a deputy from the radical left party France Unbowed (LFI).
Details of the Incident
Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old mathematics student, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Saturday, two days after being assaulted by a group of masked young men in Lyon. The attack involved beating and kicking focused on his head.
The assault occurred following a small demonstration by far-right feminists at the Institute of Political Studies (IEP), also known as Sciences-Po, in Lyon. Deranque was reportedly present to help protect the demonstrators.
Suspected Perpetrators and Political Implications
The arrests support widespread reports that the suspects are far-left militants associated with La Jeune Garde (Young Guard), a banned organization.
The involvement of Favrot, linked to LFI, places significant pressure on the party, which holds 70 seats in the National Assembly, and its leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a potential candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
Official Statements
On Sunday, Mélenchon addressed the situation, stating:
"Our party has nothing to do with this story. Those who accuse us are committing a libel.
We express our consternation, but also our empathy and compassion for [Deranque's] family and friends. We have said dozens of times that we oppose all forms of violence,"
he said.
On Monday, state prosecutor Thierry Dran provided further details during a news conference, explaining that Deranque was assaulted by "at least six" individuals. The post-mortem examination revealed fatal injuries to his skull and brain.
