Senior Kinahan Crime Group Member Sentenced

Sean McGovern, identified as a senior member of the Kinahan organised crime group, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

McGovern appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday morning. This court operates without a jury and is composed of three judges.

He was suspected of holding a senior position within the Kinahan organised crime group, which has been designated under US sanctions.

McGovern pleaded guilty to two charges involving directing the activities of a criminal organisation.

One charge, dated between 20 October 2016 and 20 December 2016, relates to the murder of Noel Kirwan.

The second charge concerns the surveillance of James Gately, a member of the rival Hutch gang, in preparation for a serious offence during the period from 17 October 2015 to 6 April 2017.

For the offence involving Gately, McGovern received a 10-year prison sentence, and for the offence related to Kirwan, he was sentenced to 14 years.

The sentences are to be served consecutively and are backdated to include the period from when McGovern was taken into custody in Dubai.

The presiding judges were Patrick McGrath, Sarah Berkeley, and Fiona Lydon.
