German Doctor Sentenced for Patient Murders

A German palliative care physician has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of killing 15 of his patients.

The court in Berlin delivered its verdict on Wednesday, convicting the 41-year-old doctor, identified only as Johannes M. in accordance with German privacy laws, of murdering 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024.

Authorities suspect that these confirmed killings may represent only a fraction of the total number. Prosecutors are actively investigating dozens of additional cases involving the doctor.

The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years old. The court was informed that all victims were critically ill, but their deaths were not considered imminent at the time of the killings.

Prosecutors detailed that during home visits, the doctor administered lethal combinations of various medications without obtaining consent from his patients.

On multiple occasions, it was reported that he set fires to conceal evidence of his crimes.

In July 2024, shortly before his arrest, prosecutors stated that the doctor killed two patients in one day: a 75-year-old man at his residence in central Berlin and, a few hours later, a 76-year-old woman in a neighboring district.

They further reported that the doctor attempted to set fire to the woman's home but was unsuccessful.

Throughout much of the year-long trial, the doctor remained silent. However, last month he admitted to having "killed people," specifically twelve of his severely ill patients.

"Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone," he told the court, explaining that he had convinced himself he was sparing them "suffering and infirmity."
He also expressed remorse, stating, "I apologised for all the suffering I had caused."

Authorities continue to suspect that he may have killed additional patients. Currently, prosecutors are investigating 76 other cases linked to him.

German media have reported that if these further cases are proven and result in convictions, this would rank among the most severe serial murder cases in Germany's history.

The doctor informed the court that he would "get involved much earlier in the forthcoming proceedings."

Victims' Families React

During the trial, relatives of the victims shared their disbelief and grief.

The mother of the youngest victim, a 25-year-old woman who died in 2021, was visibly emotional. She said,

"She never said she didn't want to live anymore."

The son of a 72-year-old woman who died in 2024 recalled his mother's plans, stating,

"My mother wanted to keep on living. She had plans to go to the Baltic Sea with her sister."

Sentencing and Legal Measures

The court ordered that the doctor be placed in preventive detention following the completion of his prison sentence. Additionally, a lifetime ban on practicing medicine was imposed.
