Fire Closes Princes Street During Edinburgh Festival Season
A fire at the former Debenhams department store has resulted in the closure of a significant portion of Princes Street, Edinburgh's main thoroughfare, during the onset of the city's festival season.
The City of Edinburgh Council has announced that efforts to secure the former Debenhams building and preserve its historic architectural features are expected to extend over "several weeks."
This closure affects bus services, which will not operate between Frederick Street and South Charlotte Street until August, coinciding with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of visitors for the International Festival and Festival Fringe.
Additionally, the tram network will be limited to running only between Edinburgh Airport and the West End, with no tram services available along Princes Street towards Leith and Newhaven.
Bus routes are currently being diverted from Princes Street to George Street. Typically, George Street is closed to traffic during August to allow bars and venues to expand across the road; however, BBC Scotland News reports that this closure is now unlikely to proceed as originally planned.
Parts of Rose Street and Rose Street South Lane remain closed as well, with diversions affecting a broad area of Edinburgh city centre.
Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) have confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the fire at the B-listed building, which occurred last week, is ongoing.
The City of Edinburgh Council has established a dedicated external webpage to provide up-to-date information on the situation.
Council leader Jane Meagher described the circumstances as "ever-changing."
"Our focus continues to be on making the building safe while aiming to retain as many of its historic features as we can. This is a painstaking process and will take time.
I'm acutely aware that we're now entering the busiest period of the year for Edinburgh, and there will inevitably be disruption in and around the city centre.
We will continue to work with bus, tram, and other transport colleagues to keep the city moving as best we can."

Edinburgh's Festival Season
During the festival season, Edinburgh's population doubles to more than one million residents and visitors.
Alongside the International Festival and Festival Fringe, the city centre hosts the Book Festival, Art Festival, and Film Festival throughout August.
The Royal Military Tattoo is held nightly at Edinburgh Castle for three weeks from 7 to 29 August.
Sports and entertainment events are also scheduled, including Scotland's men's rugby team facing Fiji at Murrayfield on Saturday, and country singer Luke Combs performing two concerts at the stadium at the end of July.
In football, Heart of Midlothian will commence their Champions League qualifying campaign against Austrian club Sturm Graz next week, while Hibernian is set to play a Europa Conference League qualifier on 30 July.

Investigation and Building Condition
The investigation into the fire's cause was initially delayed due to concerns regarding the structural integrity of the building.
Fire investigators have since been granted access to the former store, which has remained largely vacant since a previous fire in 2021.
Prior to the recent blaze, the building was undergoing redevelopment to become Scotland's first Zedwell hotel.
Photographs from the scene reveal that the building's roof was completely destroyed, with other sections sustaining severe damage.
