Fatal Explosion in Lviv

A 23-year-old female police officer was killed and 25 others injured in what Ukrainian authorities have described as a terrorist attack in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.

Two homemade explosive devices detonated after police responded to a reported break-in shortly after midnight on Sunday, according to the National Police of Ukraine. The explosives had been concealed in waste bins.

Suspect Detained and Investigation Underway

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that "an individual suspected of carrying out the terrorist attack" had been apprehended. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi identified the suspect as a Ukrainian woman.

The police later revealed that the 33-year-old suspect had constructed and planted the explosives under the "instruction" of an agent from Russia's special services.

The victim was identified as Viktoria Shpylka.

"She was only 23 years old and had begun her service at the start of the full-scale invasion of the Kherson region," the police stated on Telegram early Sunday morning.

The initial explosion occurred after a police vehicle arrived at the scene of the reported break-in at a shop located in the city center.

"Later, when a second crew arrived, another explosion went off," the police added.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that police and the Security Service of Ukraine had detained the suspect, a resident of the northwestern Rivne region.

"We are identifying other persons involved in committing this crime," he wrote on Telegram.

Meanwhile, the regional prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation into the "act of terrorism that led to grave consequences."

Context of Ongoing Conflict

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the country endured another night of Russian missile and drone strikes ahead of the fourth anniversary of Moscow's full-scale invasion, which is set to be marked on Tuesday.

Kyiv reported that its air defenses intercepted 50 Russian missiles and nearly 300 drones overnight. The attacks targeted the energy sector, residential buildings, and railway infrastructure, President Zelensky stated.

At least one person was killed in the Kyiv region, according to top local official Mykola Kalashnyk, while a woman and a child were hospitalized with injuries.

This latest aerial assault occurred two days before the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Broader Impact of the War

The invasion, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, has become the largest war in Europe since World War Two, with hundreds of thousands of military casualties—killed, wounded, and missing—estimated on both sides.

Western military experts assess that Russian combat losses have been significantly higher than those of Ukraine.

Currently, Moscow controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the southern Crimea peninsula, which it annexed in 2014.
