UK Defence Secretary to Visit Cyprus Amid Criticism
UK Defence Secretary John Healey is scheduled to visit Cyprus following criticism from the Cypriot government regarding the UK's handling of its response to drone attacks targeting an RAF base on the island.
Concerns Over Information Sharing
Dr Kyriacos Kouros, the Cypriot High Commissioner to the UK, expressed disappointment over the level of information shared with local residents after RAF Akrotiri was struck overnight on Sunday, with additional drones intercepted subsequently.
"Cypriots were 'disappointed' about the standard of information sharing with residents after RAF Akrotiri was hit overnight on Sunday and further drones were intercepted."
Calls for Enhanced Cooperation
Kouros emphasized the need for increased collaboration with local authorities to prevent future incidents.
"More cooperation" with local authorities is necessary "to safeguard that such incidents won't happen again."
UK Military Response
In response to the attacks, the UK announced the deployment of the British warship HMS Dragon to Cyprus, although the vessel is not expected to set sail until next week.
