Queensland Man Charged with Domestic Violence Murder Following Discovery of Remains
Queensland police have charged a 48-year-old man with domestic violence murder after discovering human remains believed to be those of missing mother Jana Armstrong.
The remains were found overnight in bushland off Esk Hampton Road in Redbank Creek, northeast of Toowoomba. Authorities have declared the area a crime scene.
As of 7:30am this morning, the remains had not been formally identified, but police stated they believed them to be Armstrong’s and confirmed they were in contact with her family.
Armstrong had been reported missing from Newtown after she was last seen on 7 July.
Darling Downs district detectives arrested a 48-year-old man at a property on West Street in nearby Harristown using a search warrant. He has been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence).
The man is scheduled to appear at the Toowoomba Magistrates Court tomorrow, according to police.
Police have requested that anyone with information or relevant CCTV, dashcam, or other footage contact them. Investigators are particularly interested in dashcam or CCTV footage recorded between Toowoomba and Esk, along Esk Hampton Road and the New England Highway, taken between 10:30pm on 7 July and 1:30am on 8 July.
Joyce Declines to Guarantee One Nation Policies Will Be Costed Before Next Election
One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has declined to guarantee that the party will cost all of its policies ahead of the upcoming election, following Coalition claims that the right-wing party’s agenda would damage the budget and increase interest rates.
Opposition leader Angus Taylor recently argued in a major speech that Pauline Hanson’s platform could cost more than $1 trillion over a decade, potentially forcing the Reserve Bank to raise rates and risking a sovereign debt crisis.
Appearing on , Joyce, who is One Nation’s treasury spokesperson, dismissed Taylor’s criticism.
"We will do it to the best of our ability."
When pressed by host Andrew Clennell for a guarantee, Joyce responded:
"I’m not going to give a sort of guarantee like that, Andrew, because that means I have the resources to do it. And if I get the promise that we’re going to have the resources to do it, it certainly makes it a lot easier."
It is important to note that One Nation’s staffing numbers should not affect its ability to submit costings to the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO), which provides independent analysis of proposals to all MPs, including independents.
When asked if One Nation would be prepared to fund additional staff itself, Joyce said:
"We’ll have to."
