Canadian Backpacker Dies Following Dingo Attack on K'Gari

A Canadian backpacker, Piper James, 19, died from drowning after being attacked by dingoes on a well-known Australian beach, according to a coroner's report.

James's body was discovered early on 19 January on K'Gari (previously Fraser Island), located off Queensland's eastern coast, surrounded by approximately ten dingoes.

The state's coroners court stated on Friday,

"Piper died as a result of drowning in the setting of multiple injuries, due to, or as a consequence of a dingo attack,"
while investigations into the circumstances of her death continue.

Following the incident, at least six of the dingoes found near James's body were euthanised. K'Gari is home to around 200 dingoes, which are legally protected as a native species.

Previous investigations revealed

"extensive post-mortem dingo bite marks"
on James's body and concluded it was
"not likely"
that any pre-mortem dingo bites caused her immediate death.

Background and Personal Details

In the weeks leading up to her death, James had been employed at a backpacker's hostel. She had informed friends of her plan to take an early morning swim.

Following her death, James's parents spoke with local media, sharing that their daughter had long aspired to travel and had saved money for her trip after finishing high school.

Angela and Todd James described Piper as a

"kind spirit"
with an
"infectious laugh."

Her mother told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that Piper cherished mornings spent in the ocean watching the sunrise, as it made her feel free.

"She loved to start her day in the ocean watching the sun come up, because she just felt so free there,"
her mother said.

Historical Context and Recent Incidents

The last recorded fatal dingo attack on K'Gari occurred in 2001 when a nine-year-old boy was killed after tripping and falling near a campsite, according to ABC reports.

In 2023, a woman jogging on a K'Gari beach was attacked by dingoes, forcing her to flee into the ocean. Two witnesses observed the incident, rescued her from the water, and transported her to safety in their vehicle, as reported locally at the time.
