The death toll may increase, according to Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, who visited the crash site approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from Jakarta.

One passenger told the BBC's Indonesian service that some people screamed hysterically during the collision. Other eyewitnesses reported seeing many injured victims at the scene.

Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri stated that six or seven individuals remain trapped inside the train carriages.

Context of Indonesia's Transport Safety

Indonesia's public transportation system generally experiences a high rate of accidents, partly due to aging infrastructure and inadequate maintenance.

Earlier in January 2024, several fatalities and numerous injuries occurred when two trains collided in a rice field in Cicalengka.

A drone video captured the derailed carriages of both the express and commuter trains involved in that incident.
