Mass Arrests and Police Action at Istanbul May Day Demonstrations

Turkish police have reportedly detained over 500 individuals and deployed tear gas during May Day protests in Istanbul. Many of those apprehended attempted to march toward Taksim Square, a site historically associated with anti-government demonstrations.

Since 2013, demonstrations have been prohibited in Taksim Square, which was secured by police overnight to prevent gatherings. Each year on 1 May, Turkey experiences heightened police presence as workers and unions organize marches to commemorate International Labour Day, a global observance.

The CHD lawyers' group, present at the events, confirmed that the number of arrests exceeded 500.

May Day Activities Across Turkey

In Ankara, various groups convened at Tandogan Square. Meanwhile, celebrations proceeded in Kadikoy and Kartal, locations where the governor's office granted permission for events to take place.

In Izmir, festivities were held at Gundogdu Square, and in Diyarbakır, participants gathered at Istasyon Square. From early Friday morning, stringent security measures were implemented at the entrances to these squares.

Trade unions mobilized supporters in numerous cities, including Bursa and Corum. In Istanbul's Mecidiyekoy district, a large crowd seeking to assemble was encircled by police forces.

Confrontations and Statements from Activists

Erkan Bas, president of the Turkish Workers' Party, was among those in Mecidiyekoy who managed to breach police barricades but were subsequently dispersed using water cannons and tear gas.

"Blocking access to Taksim Square was 'illegal' and called for it to be opened," Bas stated.

Official Response from the President

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his congratulations on social media platform X, addressing workers nationwide.

"I congratulate all our worker brothers and sisters who earn their living through their labor and create added value for their country and nation on May 1st, Labor and Solidarity Day, and I send my greetings and love to all workers, employers, and employees throughout our country."
