Emergency Response and Rescue Operations

Authorities mobilized nearly 500 personnel to conduct search and rescue operations and provide medical treatment to the injured. In addition, robotic devices were deployed to assist in locating individuals trapped inside the damaged building.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the explosion and have implemented "control measures" against the person responsible for overseeing the fireworks company, as reported by Chinese state media.

Within the factory premises, two gunpowder warehouses were identified as posing a significant risk during rescue efforts. To mitigate further hazards, rescue teams took precautionary steps including humidifying the area to prevent secondary accidents while evacuating residents within the designated radius.

Damage and Local Impact

The force of the blast was substantial enough to shatter windows of a nearby residential building, as documented by a CCTV reporter broadcasting live from the scene.

President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive efforts to locate individuals who remain unaccounted for and to provide medical assistance to those injured. He also emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough investigation to hold accountable those responsible for the incident, according to state media.

Eyewitness Accounts

Speaking to Beijing News, a resident living approximately 1km from the factory described the aftermath:

"The glass windows in our homes were shattered, aluminum window frames were deformed, and even the stainless-steel doors were twisted out of shape."

She added that villagers now have to take detours due to stones being blasted onto the roads.

Another local resident told the news outlet that she has left the village out of fear following the explosion.

Background on Liuyang and Fireworks Industry

Liuyang city is recognized as a major center for fireworks manufacturing and is often cited as the world's largest producer of fireworks.

Incidents involving explosions at fireworks factories and shops are unfortunately not uncommon in China and frequently result in casualties. For example, in February, an explosion at a fireworks store in Hubei province caused 12 deaths.
