Bill Gates Withdraws from India AI Impact Summit
Bill Gates will not deliver his keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, his philanthropic organisation announced hours before the Microsoft co-founder was scheduled to speak.
The Gates Foundation stated that the decision was made after "careful consideration" and "to ensure the focus remains on the [summit's] key priorities," without providing further explanation.
Context of Withdrawal and Epstein Files
Gates's withdrawal coincides with controversy surrounding his connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following Gates's name appearing in newly released files by the US Department of Justice in January.
A spokesperson for Gates described the claims in the files as "absolutely absurd and completely false," and Gates himself has expressed regret for having spent time with Epstein.
It is important to note that Gates has not been accused of any wrongdoing by Epstein's victims, and his mention in the files does not imply any criminal activity.
Summit Representation and Commitment
The Gates Foundation announced that Ankur Vora, president of its Africa and India offices, would represent the organisation and speak at the summit in place of Gates.
The foundation reaffirmed its dedication to its work in India, aiming to advance "shared health and development goals."
Other Notable Speakers and Themes
Despite Gates's absence, the summit featured prominent figures speaking on Thursday, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the summit, both advocating for the democratisation of artificial intelligence and a collaborative approach to innovation.
Modi said there was a need to share technology "so that humans don't just become a data point for AI or remain a raw material for AI."
"AI must become a medium for inclusion and empowerment, particularly for the Global South," he added.
Macron, who held bilateral talks with Modi earlier, stated there was a need to shift the AI discourse from "let's do more" to "let's do better together."
This collaborative theme was echoed by other speakers, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who emphasised that the future of AI should not be "decided by a handful of countries" or left to the "whims of a few billionaires."
Industry Commitments and India's Role
Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted India's expanding role in the AI sector, announcing that Google is working to establish a full-stack AI hub in the southern city of Vishakhapatnam, which aims to create jobs and bring advanced AI technologies to India.
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani pledged to invest $110 billion over the next seven years to develop India's AI ecosystem. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei expressed interest in collaborating with India on "testing and evaluation of models for safety and security risks."
Background on Gates's Attendance and Summit Challenges
Gates's decision to withdraw followed days of uncertainty regarding his attendance. He is currently in India and visited the southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Monday, where he reportedly discussed initiatives to enhance health, agriculture, education, and technology.
After media speculation about his potential withdrawal, his foundation initially confirmed on Tuesday that he would deliver his address as planned.
His withdrawal represents a setback for the summit, which India has promoted as a flagship event to establish the country as a global AI hub.
The event is attended by delegates from over 100 countries, including several heads of state. However, the summit has faced some controversies, including reports of mismanagement on the first day and an Indian university's claim of developing a robot dog that was later revealed to be manufactured in China.
Summit Activities and Investments
The five-day summit includes policy discussions, start-up showcases, and closed-door meetings focused on AI governance, infrastructure, and innovation.
Several companies, including Microsoft, have made investment pledges aimed at expanding AI access and infrastructure in countries such as India.
