Flooding Death Toll Rises in Kenya
At least 62 people have died in Kenya over the past week due to widespread flooding caused by heavy rains, according to authorities. This marks an increase from the previous death toll of 42 reported a week ago.
Overnight, 11 individuals were rescued after a minibus taxi, locally known as a matatu, became trapped as floodwaters rose in the capital city, Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross reported. Additionally, two children were saved from a flooded residence.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall and Flooding
The intense rainfall experienced over the past week has led to flash floods not seen in recent years. Several rivers have overflowed their banks, inundating homes and causing damage to roads, as well as power and water infrastructure.
In Nairobi, some roads have been closed due to bridge damage, and multiple schools were flooded following heavy downpours on Saturday.
Warnings and Evacuations
On Sunday, the Interior Ministry issued a warning that various parts of Kenya continue to experience heavy rains, elevating the risk of further flooding.
Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations. More than 2,000 people have already been displaced and are seeking shelter.
Ongoing Search and Rescue Efforts
Police have stated that search and rescue operations remain active in response to the "torrential rain and subsequent devastating flooding affecting various parts of the country."
More than half of the fatalities—33—have occurred in Nairobi, where inadequate drainage systems and the obstruction of rivers due to unregulated development have contributed significantly to the flooding.
Government Response
President William Ruto announced on Sunday that emergency food supplies and medical assistance are being delivered to those impacted by the floods.
"Emergency food supplies and medical assistance are being delivered to those affected," President Ruto said.
He also indicated that authorities are actively clearing blocked drainage systems to mitigate further flooding.
Regional Flooding and Climate Context
The flooding situation is not limited to Kenya. Neighboring Ethiopia has experienced similar conditions, with more than 100 fatalities resulting from floods and landslides in the southern regions of the country.
Multiple factors contribute to flooding events, but climate change plays a significant role by increasing the likelihood of extreme rainfall. The global atmosphere has warmed approximately 1.1°C since the start of the industrial era, and temperatures are expected to continue rising unless substantial emissions reductions are implemented worldwide.
