Malema Sentenced to Prison
South African opposition politician Julius Malema has been sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison after being found guilty of illegally possessing a firearm and discharging it in public.
Malema's legal representative announced plans to appeal the ruling in an effort to prevent the Economic Freedom Fighters leader and member of parliament from being incarcerated.
During the court proceedings, Malema appeared in a dark suit and red tie, displaying minimal emotion as the magistrate delivered the sentence.

Details of Conviction
Last year, Malema was convicted on five counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, firing the weapon in a public area, and reckless endangerment.
The charges stem from a 2018 incident when video footage surfaced showing Malema firing several shots into the air with a semi-automatic rifle during the Economic Freedom Fighters' fifth anniversary celebrations in South Africa's Eastern Cape province.
Implications for Parliamentary Position
Receiving a sentence exceeding one year disqualifies Malema from serving as a member of parliament. However, this disqualification will not take effect until all avenues for appeal have been exhausted.
