SpaceX Launches Largest Starship V3 Rocket After Delay

Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully launched the largest-ever Starship rocket a day after a highly anticipated test flight was postponed.

The uncrewed Starship V3 rocket lifted off from its launchpad in Texas shortly after 17:30 local time (22:30 GMT) on Friday, following SpaceX's announcement of plans for a record-breaking stock market debut.

A space rocket flies upwards into a clear blue sky, leaving a huge grey trail behind it in a widening streak.

The test flight concluded approximately one hour later when Starship splashed down into the Indian Ocean. Musk celebrated the achievement on his X platform, stating:

"Congratulations @SpaceX team on an epic first Starship V3 launch & landing! You scored a goal for humanity."

The initial launch attempt on Thursday was delayed due to a malfunctioning hydraulic pin in the launch tower.

Launch Details and Performance

The SpaceX team celebrated the launch of the most powerful and tallest rocket ever built. Although the mission met most of its major objectives, it did not proceed exactly as planned.

SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot reported that the booster failed to complete its boost-back burn following liftoff.

Additionally, one of Starship's engines malfunctioned, necessitating a slightly longer burn from the remaining five engines to compensate. While the rocket did not achieve the precise intended orbit, Huot confirmed it was traveling along a trajectory that was "within bounds." He added:

"I wouldn't call it nominal orbital insertion."

Industry and NASA Reactions

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman extended congratulations to Musk and the SpaceX team, posting on X:

"One step closer to the Moon one step closer to Mars."

Mission Payload and Flight Details

During its suborbital cruise phase, Starship successfully deployed a payload consisting of 20 mock Starlink satellites, along with two additional satellites designed to scan its heat shield and transmit data back to ground control during descent.

This flight marked the 12th launch of a SpaceX rocket and featured the latest Starship design, standing 124 meters (407 feet) tall.

Context: SpaceX's Upcoming IPO and Business Ventures

The debut of Starship V3 precedes SpaceX's planned initial public offering (IPO), which is anticipated to be the largest in Wall Street history and could commence next month.

Due to Musk's ownership stake in SpaceX, which currently values the company at $1.25 trillion, the IPO could potentially make him the first-ever trillionaire.

Beyond rocket manufacturing, SpaceX operates the satellite internet service Starlink and owns the artificial intelligence company xAI, which has attracted controversy.
