Shift in Breast Surgery Trends Reflects Active Lifestyles
Breast reduction procedures and implant removals have exceeded breast enlargements for the first time in the UK, according to recent data. Experts attribute this change to a growing preference for comfort and more active lifestyles.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) released its latest annual audit revealing that in 2025, there were 4,761 breast enlargement procedures performed, marking an 8% decrease from the previous year.
In comparison, breast reduction procedures numbered 4,673, while implant removals totaled 847. Surgeons suggest this trend aligns with a shift towards comfort and the popularity of form-fitting “athleisure” clothing.
Increase in Facial Procedures and Labiaplasty
The audit also noted a rise in facial surgeries, including facelifts and eyelid operations. Among these, brow lifts have experienced a significant increase of 27% overall.
Additionally, labiaplasty—a surgical procedure aimed at reducing, reshaping, or enlarging the labia—has seen a 6% rise in demand.
Expert Insights on Changing Preferences
Nora Nugent, president of BAAPS, commented on the evolving trends:
“For the first time, we are seeing the number of patients undergoing breast reduction and implant removal surpass those opting for augmentation. This reflects a broader shift away from exaggerated curves towards a more natural silhouette, one that better complements active lifestyles and the continued rise of athleisure fashion.”
She further explained the increase in labiaplasty procedures:
“The trend towards active lifestyles could also explain the increase in labiaplasty procedures. In my practice, patients most commonly cite discomfort during exercise and concerns around visibility in more form-fitting clothing, such as gym wear. Notably, many older women share that they have only recently become aware of labiaplasty as a solution to symptoms they have experienced for years.”
Dr. Anil Joshi, consultant ENT and facial plastic surgeon, observed similar patterns among his patients:
“Patients are becoming more selective. They are less interested in it looking like they’ve had obvious work done.”
He added insights regarding breast enlargement motivations:
“Breast enlargement has not vanished, but the motivation has possibly changed. Patients typically talk now more about lifestyle than cup size … Implant removals are rising for the same reason. Most women are not reversing a mistake. They are reflecting a new stage of life.”
Demographics and Procedure Statistics
Women continue to represent the majority of cosmetic surgery patients, accounting for 93.9% of all procedures. In 2025, a total of 25,217 operations were performed on women, reflecting a 2% decline from the previous year. Overall, 26,840 cosmetic procedures were conducted in 2025, also a 2% decrease from 2024.
For male patients, the types of procedures chosen are shifting, with facial surgeries becoming more prevalent. Eyelid surgery emerged as the most popular procedure among men for the first time, with 346 operations performed—an 8% increase. This surpassed rhinoplasty, which saw 273 procedures, marking an 18% decrease.
