Meningitis Cases Reported in Reading
A young person has died and two others are receiving treatment after meningitis cases were identified in Reading.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) South East has stated that close contacts of those affected are being offered antibiotics as a precautionary measure.
Information regarding the infection has been communicated to students and parents at all schools involved, with officials emphasizing that the risk to the wider public remains low.
Health Officials Address Concerns
Rachel Mearkle, a consultant in health protection, acknowledged the natural concern among students and staff but reassured the community about the nature of the disease's transmission.
"Students and staff will naturally be feeling worried...however meningococcal meningitis requires very close contact to spread and large outbreaks as we saw in Kent recently are thankfully rare."
Details on the Cases
The UKHSA confirmed that one of the cases has been identified as Meningitis B (MenB), while results for the other two cases are still pending.
Highlighting the prevalence of the disease, Mearkle added that meningitis can affect anyone, with approximately 300 to 400 cases of meningococcal disease diagnosed annually in England.
"Anyone can get meningitis, and around 300 to 400 cases of meningococcal disease are diagnosed in England every year,"
She noted that the illness is most common among babies, young children, teenagers, and young adults.
"It's most common in babies, young children, teenagers, and young adults.
It needs to be treated quickly so it is important to know the signs and symptoms. They can appear in any order and may not all be present, so seek rapid medical attention if there is ever any concern."
