Surgical Decontamination Unit Requires Full Replacement
A surgical decontamination unit at Foresterhill, Aberdeen, that was non-operational for four months will need to be completely replaced, according to a report from NHS Grampian.
In October, the Central Decontamination Unit (CDU) was closed after an unknown substance, believed to be linked to faulty equipment, was detected on instruments sent for cleaning. This closure led to the postponement of nearly 1,500 hospital procedures and appointments.
Following a £2 million investment in upgrades, the CDU resumed full operations at the end of January. However, the budget report indicated that due to the unit's age, it must eventually be fully replaced.
Report Highlights Importance and Need for Replacement
The report presented to NHS Grampian's board emphasized the critical role of decontamination services in supporting acute services, clinics, and community healthcare. It stated:
"The NHS Grampian decontamination services are critical to the operation of acute services, various clinics and community healthcare.
"The aged facility and associated backlog maintenance risk mean a replacement facility is required.
"There is currently no alternative service provision with sufficient capacity locally and there have been recent instances where service has been lost impacting significantly on clinical activity."
The report also mentioned that plans for a new facility would be developed over the coming year.
Funding and Future Plans
If NHS Grampian's annual budget is approved by board members on Thursday, £500,000 will be allocated for the new facility project. The Scottish government had previously invested £2 million to improve the buildings and equipment following the shutdown last year.
Upon reopening, NHS Grampian expressed hope that the refurbishment of the CDU would help prevent similar issues in the future.
During the unit's closure, staff from Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen, as well as teams from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Highland, assisted in maintaining urgent care services.
