Food Pantry Established to Support Vulnerable Patients

Mental health workers have established a food pantry after observing an increase in patients struggling to afford food and experiencing delays in referrals to food banks.

Staff from the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have intervened in Wolverhampton to assist individuals living with little or no food in their homes.

This initiative has led to a call for donations of non-perishable food items, with a collection box now available at Penn Hospital.

The pantry was created by the trust's Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team to offer short-term assistance while arrangements for referrals to local food banks are made.

Appeal for Community Support

"Food poverty disproportionately affects those living with a mental health condition and we're seeing first-hand how worrying about food can worsen distress and slow down recovery," said senior nurse practitioner Helene Madden.

"Nobody should have to worry about whether they will be able to eat. We hope that our food bank will help to support vulnerable people in Wolverhampton whilst they are awaiting support from food banks."

Elaine Coulson, team manager, emphasized the importance of maintaining the pantry's supplies.

"[This will mean] our service users have enough food until we can arrange a referral to a local food bank," she said.

"We would encourage people to give what they can. Even a small donation can have a massive impact."
