Doctors Vote to Strike Over Pay Erosion

Doctors on the Isle of Man have voted in favour of strike action amid ongoing disputes concerning pay erosion. The British Medical Association (BMA) reported that 104 out of 168 eligible members participated in the ballot, representing a 61% turnout, with 95% of those voting in support of strike action.

The BMA highlighted that inflation has effectively resulted in a 29% real-terms pay cut for doctors since 2008.

Manx Care, the island's healthcare provider, expressed optimism that its revised pay offer, presented on 18 June, will be accepted. A ballot on this improved proposal is scheduled to conclude next week. As of now, no specific date has been set for any industrial action.

Leadership Changes at Manx Care

The announcement of the strike ballot results coincided with the departure of Teresa Cope, the chief executive of Manx Care since its establishment in 2021. Following her resignation, it was also announced that Wendy Reid, chair of the healthcare provider, will be stepping down during the summer.

Reactions from Medical Representatives

Dr Prakash Thiagarajan, chair of the Isle of Man Medical Society, stated that the vote conveyed

"a clear message that the current situation cannot continue".

He further explained that pay erosion has left doctors feeling undervalued and increasingly concerned about the future of the medical profession on the island.

Dr Emma Runswick, deputy chair of the BMA council, commented that by voting for strike action, doctors are

"standing up for fair pay, recognition of their expertise, and the long-term sustainability of medical staffing on the island".

Background on Previous Pay Agreements

Earlier, doctors on the Isle of Man had called off a planned strike in January 2025 after reaching a pay agreement covering two financial years from 2023-24. This agreement included an 8% pay increase for the first year, followed by a 6% rise from April 2024 and an additional 2% increase from February of the previous year.

Despite these increments, the BMA maintains that doctors' real-terms pay remains significantly below the levels seen in 2008.
