Teenager Dies in Spain After Suspected Reaction to Vape Oil
An 18-year-old boy from Dundee, Harry Whitton, died while on holiday in Benidorm, Spain, after what his family believe was a reaction to vape oil.
Harry was accompanied by his girlfriend at the time of the incident. According to a social media post by his father, Colin Whitton, the family suspects that Harry's death was linked to a vape oil he purchased locally in Benidorm.
"We received the preliminary post-mortem results for Harry today and would like to share some info in the hope to quash any rumours and to warn everyone about the dangers of vaping."
"If one thing comes from the loss of our boy Harry, it has to be us highlighting the dangers of using vapes/oils etc."
Colin Whitton indicated that Harry experienced a reaction during the holiday, which they believe was caused by the vape oil he recently acquired in Benidorm. This vape oil was the only change in what he had been using compared to what his girlfriend was using.
Breathing Difficulties After Lunch
Whitton described that Harry's throat constricted, leading to breathing problems after he and his girlfriend had lunch together. Both had also consumed a cocktail with their meal.
"There are still far too many unknowns about these vape oils and no long-term studies have been done on their effects,"
He emphasized the lack of comprehensive research on vape oils and their long-term impact.
The family has initiated fundraising efforts to assist with repatriating Harry's body and arranging his funeral.
"We should be arranging his surprise 18th, instead we will be home to arrange a funeral. It's all just very unimaginable and feels very unreal.
We want to share with you all just how loved and special our boy truly was. Everything he done, he done with his cheeky character and pure heart and soul."
Harry was known to Dundee FC as a "familiar and friendly face" within the hospitality lounges at Dens Park, where he was employed.
The club expressed that he was "highly valued by colleagues and warmly regarded by supporters."
"We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Harry Whitton while on holiday in Spain.
Our thoughts are with Harry's family, friends and everyone who knew him at this incredibly difficult time."
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated,
"We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Benidorm and are in contact with the local authorities."
