Car Theft of Vital Medical Equipment

A mother from Gorseinon, Swansea, has expressed shock after her car containing essential medical supplies and equipment worth £4,000 was stolen. The stolen items included a specialist car seat for her four-year-old daughter, Eva Rae, who suffers from severe disabilities.

Catrin Jones, 25, had parked her blue Volkswagen Taigo in a car park while collecting Eva Rae's medication from a local pharmacy at approximately 15:00 BST on Monday.

Eva Rae has Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), a rare inherited disorder that severely affects her health and requires specialised equipment, including a £3,000 car seat designed for her condition.

The theft forced Eva to travel to a pre-planned hospital stay at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff later that evening without the specialist seat, lying in the back seat while her mother held her.

"It was very unsafe and we should not have done it but if we missed the appointment we would face a three-year wait and we do not have that time," Catrin said.

About Metachromatic Leukodystrophy

According to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, MLD is a rare inherited disorder primarily affecting the brain's white matter, leading to a progressive loss of physical and eventually mental abilities.

The condition is estimated to affect approximately one in 40,000 people in the UK.

There is currently no cure for MLD. Eva was diagnosed at 18 months old and was given a life expectancy of five years; she will turn five this coming Sunday.

Eva has lost the ability to talk and walk and is fed through a tube.

"So it starts physical and then becomes neurological," Catrin explained. "I feel we are now in that neurological stage."

Details of the Theft

On Monday afternoon, Catrin was at Sainsbury's when she accidentally left her bag containing the car keys inside the pushchair while placing Eva into it. Upon returning about 20 minutes later, she discovered the car was missing. Local CCTV footage later showed the vehicle being driven away at 15:21 BST.

"I was shocked," Catrin said, noting that the thieves would have seen a blue badge, photographs of her daughter, and vital medical supplies inside the vehicle.

Among the stolen items were Eva's seizure medication, feeding kit, and the specialised £3,000 car seat.

"It's important stuff that needs to be carried around with me everywhere I go," Catrin said. "I was most upset about my daughter's car seat. That's a specialised car seat - we can't travel anywhere. So hospital appointments have become a burden because we can't get to them without that seat."

Ongoing Challenges and Police Investigation

Catrin is currently in hospital undergoing "nippy mask training" to assist with Eva's nighttime breathing. She has been managing the situation from Eva's hospital bed and reported that the stolen car has been spotted multiple times since Monday.

"The police have no update at all about my car," she said. "They said they were going to trace it up but we haven't heard anything yet."

Catrin also expressed concern that funds raised by the community to create memories for Eva may now need to be redirected to replace the stolen equipment.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police acknowledged the distress caused by the theft and confirmed that an investigation is underway. They urged anyone who sees the vehicle to contact the authorities.
