Professional dancer Amy Dowden has credited her victory on a high-stakes evasion challenge with restoring her confidence and belief in her future following her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The 36-year-old won the latest series of the challenge show alongside fellow Strictly Come Dancing professional Carlos Gu, sharing the title with actor Brian Conley and his daughter, comedian Lucy Conley. The achievement marked a historic moment for the programme: the first time in its history that two pairs successfully evaded capture throughout the entire competition.
The format requires celebrities to remain on the run while an elite team of hunters—equipped with CCTV access, helicopters, drones, dogs, media campaigns and cyber forensic technology—attempts to track them down. All proceeds benefit Stand Up To Cancer.
According to coverage of the finale, the nail-biting conclusion saw both winning pairs boarding an extraction plane from a beach in north Wales, narrowly escaping their pursuers as the hunters closed in.
How has cancer shaped her perspective on the win?
Dowden was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer in May 2023 at age 32, discovering a lump the day before her honeymoon was due to begin. She underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and fertility treatment, which triggered early menopause. She documented her journey in the documentary Strictly Amy: Cancer And Me.
Speaking after her victory, Dowden reflected on what the win meant to her recovery.
Cancer took a lot away from me in the last two years but I truly feel I've got my confidence back and this has given me the belief I can go on to achieve anything.She described the moment of escape with palpable relief:
We got on to that plane, I was just like, 'celebrate!' I grabbed the champagne!
The Welsh dancer, who also manages Crohn's disease, made her return to the Strictly ballroom in 2025 after her treatment concluded. According to reports following the finale, she had previously considered stepping away from professional dancing altogether before deciding to continue her career.
What motivated the pair during the competition?
Dowden and Gu both acknowledged that their Strictly colleagues had little faith in their chances.
All the hard work we put in those two weeks all of a sudden made it so worth it.Dowden explained that their determination was fuelled by a deeper purpose beyond personal glory.
I think wanting to do this to raise awareness for cancer, I think, inspired us. We knew we were doing this not just for us but for everyone going through it who might be watching at home.
The competition also marked a reunion between Dowden and Brian Conley, who had been paired together on Strictly in 2017. According to the cast announcement for the 2026 series, the show began on 3 August with episodes airing twice weekly before concluding on 25 August.

Just before we ran to the plane, we're in the sand dunes and dad's like, 'There's no way I'll win. They'll pick me off, I'm an old man, you've got to do this for us'.She described her shock at seeing her father board the plane after her:
I was so nervous and then I got on that plane, turned around and he was there. That was crazy! I'll never experience any feeling like that. It was just pure joy and shock.
Lucy also reflected on the disbelief among those who knew about their participation.
Nobody who knew we were doing it believed we would win! No-one had any faith in us. Everyone thought we were going to be bad.
