New Osprey Chicks Hatch in North Wales

Over the past two weeks, several osprey chicks have hatched in north Wales, conservationists have confirmed.

The osprey pair Elen and Teifi, located in the Glaslyn Valley in Gwynedd, have welcomed three new chicks. Similarly, their neighbors Blue and Aeron have also hatched three chicks.

Another osprey pair, whose nest is also monitored at the Glaslyn Ospreys Centre near Porthmadog, has successfully hatched chicks as well.

In addition, Aran, a former male osprey from Glaslyn, has a new mate and has hatched a chick on a newly established nest.

Staff at the centre are uncertain about the total number of new chicks this season because, although some nests are equipped with cameras providing close-up views, not all nests have such coverage.

The osprey pairs can be observed at the Gwynedd osprey centre through a collaboration between conservation organizations Glaslyn Ospreys and Friends of the Ospreys.

"Over two decades of successful conservation efforts in the Glaslyn Valley by Glaslyn Ospreys and the Friends of the Ospreys group has made the centre at Pont Croesor one of the key osprey viewing locations in the UK."

Previously, it has been estimated that there are approximately 270 osprey pairs in Scotland, around 25 pairs in England, and five pairs in Wales.
