Bug Hotels Inspired by Leeds Landmarks Installed at Burley Park Station

Near Burley Park Station in Leeds, bug hotels designed to resemble notable local landmarks have been installed as part of a community initiative.

The project is a collaboration between Cardigan Community Centre and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) charity, resulting in four distinct models placed at the station.

Bug hotels serve as safe habitats for insects and small creatures, offering shelter, hibernation spots, and nesting areas.

Community Engagement and Conservation Awareness

Col Powell, Community Hub Manager at TCV Hollybush in Kirkstall, highlighted the visual impact of the installations, stating they are an "eye-catching thing people will see on their commute if they are going through the station."

The bug hotels are modeled after the Hyde Park Picture House, Cardigan Centre, the Headingley Bear Pit, and the Burley Park bandstand.

Powell expressed hope that the models, constructed from recycled pallets, would spark conversations about conservation efforts.

"Hopefully they are done in a memorable enough way that it sticks in people's heads and is more of an inspirational thing rather than browbeating people into feeling bad about not saving the planet."

TCV's mission includes providing access to nature and maintaining green spaces within local communities.

Powell added that similar initiatives are taking place elsewhere, with local groups adopting stations to enhance their appearance and make them more welcoming.

"It is happening in various other places where local groups kind of adopt the station in a way to try and look after the aesthetics of it and to make them generally more appealing places for people,"
"The Picture House is my favourite one as well, it is one of my favourite places in Leeds so to see it in bug hotel form is brilliant.
It was a really nice kind of community collaborative process that has ended up with these brilliant things."
