Headline Performers Announced for Glasgow 2026 Opening Ceremony

KT Tunstall will headline the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place at the OVO Hydro on 23 July. Alongside her, Nathan Evans and Saint Phnx will also feature as headline performers.

The ceremony will officially commence 10 days of sporting events, showcasing a diverse lineup including singer-songwriter Callum Beattie, who has previously sold out shows at the venue this year. Additionally, musician Nina Nesbitt will perform a rendition of a beloved Scottish track.

Organisers have emphasised that the event will place "Glasgow at the heart of the story," featuring performances from global superstars, emerging talent, and a cast of volunteers from Scotland and beyond.

Approximately 600 volunteers will participate in the ceremony.

Inspirations and Creative Influences

The opening ceremony draws inspiration from various sources, including Bad Bunny's halftime show at this year's Super Bowl and the iconic dancing teacakes featured in Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Nathan Evans and His Contribution

Nathan Evans, known for his viral sea shanty "Wellerman," recently released a World Cup version of his song "Home" to celebrate Scotland's first World Cup appearance in 28 years.

Evans is expected to bring a "Tartan Army spirit" to the crowd as the cast begins narrating the story of Glasgow during the ceremony. The Airdrie singer has also collaborated with the band Saint Phnx to produce the World Cup version of "Home."

KT Tunstall's Role and Background

KT Tunstall, known for hits such as "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," is scheduled to perform at the Hydro in October as part of her world tour. She has a history of performing at venues across Scotland and previously opened the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships held in George Square.

Musical Elements and Parade of Nations

Later in the ceremony, the electronic-trad band Valtos from Skye will provide the soundtrack for the ceremonial Parade of Nations. Athletes from 74 nations and territories will enter the arena, presenting their batons to the music of Valtos, who have collaborated with musicians from across the Commonwealth.

Traditionally, the King's Baton Relay involves a single baton traveling through all 74 Commonwealth nations. However, for this edition, each competing team has been given its own baton to decorate.

The baton relay began in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, last March, with Sir Chris Hoy as the first runner. It arrived in Scotland on 1 July and will continue across more than 50 events in Scotland before culminating at the Hydro.

Organisers' Statements and Ceremony Vision

Louisa Mahon, chief marketing and ceremonies officer at Glasgow 2026, said: "Glasgow doesn't do things in half measures - we sing louder, dance harder and are known for throwing our doors open wider than anywhere else.
"On 23 July, we will share that spirit with 74 nations from across the Commonwealth in this beautifully curated ceremony.
"An opening ceremony is the extension of the host city's culture and we're proud to put the future of Scottish music and current homegrown stars on a bill alongside artists like KT Tunstall, who helped lay the foundations for emerging artists in Scotland."
"The show is a love letter to Glasgow, to Scotland and to the Commonwealth nations we're about to welcome with open arms," she added.
"This is going to be a night to remember."

Additional Information on the Games

This year's Commonwealth Games will feature a reduced program of 10 sports, compared to 17 sports held 12 years ago, reflecting challenges faced by the competition in recent years.

Tickets for the opening ceremony and other events are available via the official Games website.
