Introduction

It has been just over a year since Scott Mills assumed the role of presenter for the UK's most listened to breakfast show on BBC Radio 2. His recent dismissal, stemming from allegations concerning his personal conduct, presents a significant challenge for the station's executives.

This breakfast show position is highly coveted and rarely changes hands. Mills' predecessor, Zoe Ball, hosted the show for nearly six years; Chris Evans held the role for almost nine years; and Terry Wogan remains the longest-serving host, with over 27 years across two separate periods.

Given this history, it is unlikely that Radio 2 had initiated a search for Mills' successor prior to his departure.

Below is an overview of potential candidates considered for the role:

Vernon Kay

Vernon Kay is among the leading contenders to replace Scott Mills. Currently, he hosts the mid-morning show on Radio 2, which is the largest in the UK with an audience of 6.7 million listeners.

Kay is a well-known media personality and was entrusted with this key slot when he succeeded Ken Bruce in May 2023. However, having recently taken on this role, he may be reluctant to move again so soon. Additionally, station executives might be hesitant to reposition one of their top presenters twice within a short timeframe.

If Kay were to transition to the breakfast show, this would necessitate finding a new host for the mid-morning slot.

Sara Cox

Sara Cox presents a compelling option, combining extensive experience with a strong on-air personality. She has prior breakfast show experience, having hosted Radio 1's breakfast show from 2000 to 2003, and has served as a stand-in presenter for Radio 2's breakfast show since 2012.

Cox is one of Radio 2's prominent figures, having worked across various shows. Since 2019, she has hosted the weekday teatime show, which was recently extended from two to three hours.

This drive-time slot is arguably less demanding than the early morning breakfast show. Similar to Kay, if Cox were to move to the breakfast show, it would create a significant vacancy in Radio 2's schedule.

Rylan Clark

Rylan Clark is a well-known mainstream figure with a diverse media career spanning reality television, podcasting, and radio. He has been with the BBC since 2018 and currently hosts a three-hour show on Radio 2 on Saturday afternoons.

Clark has also collaborated closely with Scott Mills as co-host of the BBC One Eurovision semi-finals. His broad appeal is evidenced by winning a BAFTA last year alongside Rob Rinder for the Italian travel series Rob & Rylan's Grand Tour. Additionally, he has appeared on 's Gogglebox and stepped down in 2023 after four years presenting the Strictly Come Dancing spin-off It Takes Two.

Gary Davies

Following Mills' final show on Tuesday, veteran broadcaster Gary Davies has taken over presenting duties. Davies frequently substitutes for presenters such as Vernon Kay and Rylan Clark during their holidays.

He hosts his own show on Radio 2, Sounds of the 80s, on Saturday nights and has been with the station since 2017. Davies began his radio career in the mid-1980s, working with stations including Radio 1, Virgin Radio, and Century Radio, making him a familiar voice to Radio 2 listeners.

Greg James

Greg James is a highly compelling candidate on paper. He has hosted the breakfast show on Radio 1 for over seven years and is well-acquainted with the unique demands of this time slot.

A move to Radio 2 would follow a precedent set by Chris Evans and Zoe Ball, who both transitioned from hosting Radio 1's breakfast show to Radio 2's.

However, timing is crucial. James remains a central figure to Radio 1's identity, and his departure could create a significant gap at that station.

Claudia Winkleman

Claudia Winkleman represents a bold and high-profile choice for Radio 2. She enjoys widespread popularity through her roles on television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and The Traitors. Her distinctive, warm, and slightly chaotic presenting style could bring a fresh and unique energy to the breakfast show.

Winkleman is widely recognized, trusted, and appeals across various age groups. However, the breakfast show demands a daily, high-intensity commitment, and her career is heavily focused on television, including her new chat show.

Balancing both commitments could be challenging, and Radio 2 would require a significant time commitment from her to make this arrangement feasible.

Clara Amfo

Clara Amfo, currently a presenter on BBC TV's The One Show, has a strong background in radio, having been a key voice on Radio 1 for several years. She stepped down from her radio role at the end of 2023 but remains within the BBC, engaging in a broader range of projects.

This positions her well for a role such as the Radio 2 breakfast show host. Amfo is experienced, recognizable, and not currently tied to a daily radio slot, making a move to Radio 2 a natural progression.

Since leaving her radio show, she has developed a diverse portfolio across television and may be interested in returning to radio broadcasting.

Clara Amfo hosts the next act at the Radio 1 Future Sounds Stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend 2023 at Camperdown Wildlife Centre on May 28, 2023 in Dundee, Scotland.

Other Potential Candidates

Additional Radio 2 DJs who could be considered include Emma Willis, who hosts a Saturday show, as well as Trevor Nelson and OJ Borg, both established presenters on the station.

Alternatively, the BBC might opt for a complete refresh by introducing a new face, such as Capital's Jordan North or 33-year-old The One Show presenter Ronan Kemp.

Conversely, the station could choose a veteran DJ like Tony Blackburn, whose radio career spans more than six decades.

There is also the possibility that the BBC might attempt to bring back Chris Evans, who could be tempted to return for a second tenure on the breakfast show that was highly successful during the 2010s.
